Why there’s no off switch
Meta treats the assistant as optional to use, not optional to have. WhatsApp’s “About Meta AI” page calls it “an optional service from Meta.” The same page says Meta can read only messages that mention @Meta AI or that people choose to share with it.
So the button stays, but it’s inert until you tap it. Meta also tests different entry points. WhatsApp says some people see a pink and purple oval or a blue and purple circle, and availability varies by country.
Third-party “remove Meta AI” mods aren’t worth the risk. They’re unofficial versions of WhatsApp, and WhatsApp’s own Restricted chat feature exists partly to keep unofficial clients out of chats.
What Meta AI can and can’t read
Meta AI reads only what you send it or tag it in. This is the part most people worry about, and WhatsApp’s wording is specific, as of October 2026.
- Your normal chats: stay end-to-end encrypted. “Meta can’t read any other messages in your personal chats.”
- Messages that mention @Meta AI, or that someone forwards to it: Meta can read these.
- A group where someone added Meta AI as a member: Meta can read new messages sent after it joined.
- Private Processing features (message summaries, writing help): WhatsApp says Meta can’t read or access the messages you share with these.
The group case is the one to watch. Anyone in a group can add Meta AI, and from then on it can read new messages there.
Every setting you can actually change in WhatsApp
There are four real controls. Menu paths below come from WhatsApp’s Help Center as of October 2026. Some features roll out gradually, so you may not see every one yet.
| Control | What it does | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Private Processing features | Turns message summaries and writing help on or off. Off by default | Settings > Chats > Private Processing |
| Web search | Stops Meta AI searching the web in Incognito chats. On by default | Settings > Chats > Private Processing |
| Restricted chat | Nobody in that chat can use Meta AI features on it | Tap the chat name > Restricted chat (Android one-to-one chats: chat menu > View contact) |
| Remove Meta AI from a group | Kicks Meta AI out. Admins only | Group name > members list > Meta AI > Remove from group |
Restricted chat is the strongest of these. When it’s on, people in that chat can’t use Meta AI features there, can’t export the chat, and can’t save media automatically. In a group, only admins can turn it on. In a one-to-one chat, either person can.
It replaces an older setting called Advanced Chat Privacy, which WhatsApp launched on April 23, 2025. If you already turned that on, WhatsApp says the chat won’t switch to Restricted chat by itself. You need the latest app, and you set it from your primary phone, not a linked computer.
Don’t be surprised if it’s missing. WhatsApp hasn’t announced a wide release date. On October 5, 2026, a QNA news report said Restricted chat was reaching some beta testers first, and only for one-to-one chats. If you don’t see it, tap the chat name and look for Advanced chat privacy instead. WhatsApp’s April 2025 announcement says that setting also blocks people from using messages for AI features.
There’s one gap WhatsApp admits. People on older versions of the app may still be able to use unofficial clients or AI agents in the chat, and you won’t be told if someone isn’t up to date.
Turning off web search has a cost too. WhatsApp says Meta AI’s answers in Incognito chats will then rely on what the model learned when it was last trained, so they can be out of date.
How to delete what Meta AI already has
Deleting the chat isn’t enough. Meta’s Privacy Center says deleting a Meta AI chat in WhatsApp only removes it from WhatsApp. To delete Meta’s copy, you type a command, as of October 2026.
- Open your chat with Meta AI.
- Type /reset-ai and send it to wipe Meta AI’s copy of that chat.
- Or type /reset-all-ais to reset all the AIs on WhatsApp, including ones in group chats you’re in.
- Then delete the chat from your screen the usual way.
Meta’s Privacy Center says these commands delete the AI’s copy of your messages and the details it saved about you. You’ll still see your own copy until you delete it.
Instagram, Facebook and Messenger
We found no off switch documented for these apps either. The controls are the same idea: don’t start AI chats, reset the ones you have, and watch what’s shared in group chats.
Instagram’s help page has one detail worth knowing. When you or anyone in a chat uses Meta AI features on it, messages from the past 30 days are shared with Meta AI. So a friend can share your messages and photos with it. Instagram’s advice is blunt: don’t put passwords, financial details or other sensitive information in chats you don’t want AI to use. You can delete or unsend messages to keep them out.
Resets work the same way outside WhatsApp. Meta’s Privacy Center says the /reset-ai and /reset-all-ais commands also apply in Instagram and Messenger chats with Meta AI.
Does Meta use your AI chats for ads?
Yes, in most regions. Meta announced on October 1, 2025 that it would use people’s interactions with its AI features to personalize content and ads across its apps, starting December 16, 2025.
Two limits come from the same announcement. Meta says it doesn’t use chats about religion, sexual orientation, politics, health, ethnicity, philosophical beliefs or trade union membership for ads. And if you haven’t added your WhatsApp account to Accounts Center, your Meta AI chats on WhatsApp aren’t used to personalize Facebook or Instagram.
WhatsApp says adding it to Accounts Center is optional, and that Accounts Center is being renamed Meta Account, so you may see either name. Keeping WhatsApp out of it is the cleanest way to keep your WhatsApp AI chats separate. For Facebook and Instagram, Meta points to Ads Preferences and feed controls. Its announcement describes no separate opt-out for AI chats.
If you’re comparing assistants on privacy, ChatGPT handles this differently. See whether deleting ChatGPT history actually deletes it and whether ChatGPT can see your other chats.
What to do next
- Type /reset-all-ais in your Meta AI chat on WhatsApp, then delete the chat. Repeat in Instagram and Messenger if you’ve used it there.
- Open Settings > Chats > Private Processing and check that the features you don’t want are off.
- Turn on Restricted chat (or Advanced chat privacy, if that’s what your app shows) in any group or one-to-one chat where you don’t want AI used. If you’re a group admin, remove Meta AI from the member list.
- Check whether WhatsApp is in your Accounts Center (or Meta Account) and remove it if you don’t want your WhatsApp AI chats shaping ads elsewhere.
