Apple confirms iPhone Duo broken screen issue: how to get a replacement

Apple told 9to5Mac on Monday it knows about an inner-screen fault on a small share of units. Owners with a cracked fold or a bright line should go to AppleCare, even if they bought from a carrier.

Question: My iPhone Duo inner screen cracked. Will Apple replace it?
Answer: Apple has confirmed that a "small number" of iPhone Duo phones have a faulty inner screen, and it says affected owners should get a replacement through AppleCare. If your Duo's inner screen has cracked along the hinge or shows a bright line across it, contact AppleCare before paying anyone for a repair, whether you bought the phone from Apple or a carrier.

What happened

Apple’s foldable went on sale on Friday, October 23, 2026, starting at $1,999, according to CNBC. By Sunday, 9to5Mac had counted about ten owner reports of the same failure. The inner screen splits along the center line of the fold, leaving a horizontal band of pixels stuck glowing white. A couple of owners said it happened before they had finished setting the phone up.

On Monday (October 26), Apple sent 9to5Mac a statement, which the site published in full. Apple said it knows about a fault with the Duo’s inner screen that affects “a small number” of units, and that owners who see problems should “contact AppleCare for a replacement.” CNBC, The Verge and Engadget published the same statement.

9to5Mac reported more detail alongside the statement. According to Apple, most Duos aren’t affected and the fault tends to show up soon after the phone goes into use. 9to5Mac also says you don’t need AppleCare+ for this replacement, and that carrier buyers should go to AppleCare rather than their carrier. An Apple spokesperson told The Verge that most units aren’t susceptible.

Apple hasn’t said what causes it. iFixit published its teardown on October 25. It built a 3D model of the hinge from CT scans, teardown footage and Apple’s patents, then laid it over photos of broken screens. The damage clusters just below the spot where the cable between the two halves crosses the hinge. One possibility iFixit raises is a center support bar that doesn’t drop far enough as the phone closes, which would press the curved screen onto it. That’s a hypothesis, and iFixit presents it as one. iFixit also notes that many of the damage reports describe a crunch or pop during folding, with the owner pushing past it.

Who is affected

Apple says only a small number of Duos have the fault. It hasn’t said how many, or named any batch or serial range. According to 9to5Mac, where you bought it doesn’t change who you call: it’s AppleCare either way.

Your situation What Apple and the reports say
Bought from Apple, inner screen cracked or lit up Contact AppleCare for a replacement. 9to5Mac says most owners it saw got a straight swap at an Apple Store
Bought from a carrier Contact AppleCare, not the carrier (9to5Mac). Before Apple spoke, 9to5Mac reported one carrier buyer saying they’d been told the phone must have been dropped
No AppleCare+ 9to5Mac says it isn’t needed for this fault
Screen damage Apple decides isn’t this fault Apple lists out-of-warranty inner display repair at $999, as of October 26, 2026 (CNBC). iFixit’s October 20 copy of Apple’s list shows $99 with AppleCare coverage
Phone working normally after a few days Apple told 9to5Mac and The Verge the fault shows up early. Engadget takes that as a good sign for phones still fine after a few days

We couldn’t load the Duo prices on Apple’s own repair page on October 26: its price tool returned “Pricing failed to load.” The $999 figure comes from CNBC, which cites Apple’s site, and iFixit’s October 20 copy of Apple’s price list.

What to do now

  1. Check the inner screen. Look along the fold for a hairline crack, and across the right side for a bright line or a white block of pixels. Those match the reports 9to5Mac and iFixit collected.
  2. Back up first. Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup and tap Back Up Now while on Wi-Fi. Apple’s service-prep page warns a phone may come back erased. If you use passkeys, read what happens to passkeys if you lose your phone before you hand it in.
  3. Prepare it for service. On iOS 27 or later, open Find My, pick the Duo, tap More > Repair or Trade In > Enable. On iOS 26 or earlier, turn off Find My in Settings > [your name] > Find My. Remove cards from Wallet too.
  4. Contact AppleCare. Use the Apple Support app or getsupport.apple.com, or book a Genius Bar visit. Say it’s the inner display issue Apple acknowledged on October 26.
  5. Know your return window. Apple’s US policy gives 14 calendar days from delivery for products bought directly from Apple. Phones bought from a carrier or another store follow that seller’s return policy.

Apple hasn’t given any advice on how to fold the phone. Many of the reports iFixit gathered describe a hinge that went tight or crunched before the owner pushed past it, so if yours feels like that, we’d stop and call AppleCare rather than force it. What we don’t know yet

  • The cause. Apple hasn’t named one. iFixit’s support-bar theory is unconfirmed.
  • How many phones. Apple says “a small number” and gives no figure.
  • Whether replacements are safe from it. Apple hasn’t said whether swapped units come from a fixed batch.
  • Carrier stores. Apple says to contact AppleCare. Whether carriers will swap phones themselves is unconfirmed.
