Apple AppleCare Checked October 2026

Is AppleCare+ worth it for AirPods Pro?

The 2026 prices, the break-even point against an $89 repair, and the one thing AppleCare+ will never pay for.

Question: Should I pay for AppleCare+ when I buy AirPods Pro 3?
Answer: Usually yes for AirPods Pro 3, and the arithmetic is blunt. Apple's own store lists AppleCare+ for AirPods Pro 3 at $19.99 a year, or $1.99 a month, and a single accidental-damage repair drops from $89 to a $29 service fee, so one dropped earbud pays for about three years of the plan. The exception is loss: Apple does not replace a lost AirPod or a lost case under any AppleCare plan for headphones, so if losing earbuds is your habit, the plan does not help there.

What the plan gives you

Situation Without AppleCare+ With AppleCare+ for AirPods Pro 3
One AirPod dropped or damaged $89 to fix or replace $29 service fee per incident
Charging case damaged $89 to fix or replace $29 service fee per incident
Case lost $99 to replace Not covered, same $99
Battery below 80% capacity $49 battery service No charge
Hardware fault One-year limited warranty Extended warranty coverage
Support 90 days of technical support 24/7 priority support from Apple experts
Express Replacement Service Only with the plan Yes, Apple ships a replacement first

Those are the US prices in October 2026. AirPods Pro 3 cost $249 on Apple’s store, and AppleCare+ for AirPods Pro 3 is $19.99 a year or $1.99 a month, billed separately until cancelled, with unlimited repairs for accidents like drops and spills, 24/7 priority support and Express Replacement Service. Apple’s own legal terms also list a fixed-term plan for AirPods Pro 3 at $39, and the resellers that sell it describe it as two years of cover.

The out-of-warranty repair prices are Apple’s own published estimates, and they are estimates rather than quotes. Tax is added on top, and an authorized service provider inspects the device and sets the final fee.

The break-even maths

The case for the plan rests on two numbers: what a repair costs without it and what it costs with it.

One broken AirPod costs $89 without cover and $29 with it A bar chart with three bars: replacing one damaged AirPods Pro 3 earbud without AppleCare+ costs $89, the same replacement with AppleCare+ costs a $29 service fee, and AppleCare+ for AirPods Pro 3 costs $19.99 a year. One incident saves $60 against a $19.99 a year plan, so the first repair covers the cost of about three years of cover. On the $39 two-year plan that resellers sell, a single repair still covers more than the whole plan. The battery is the quieter argument: a $49 battery service becomes free once capacity drops below 80%, and Apple’s AirPods repair page says it replaces the battery for no extra charge if capacity drops below that level.

The plan is also cheap relative to the alternative. A new pair of AirPods Pro 3 is $249. A lost earbud and case come to $188 between them, and repairing one earbud without cover costs $89, so the bill for a pair in the wash is most of a new set.

How the service actually works

If something breaks and you hold the plan, the process is the same as any Apple repair. You describe the problem on Apple’s AirPods support page, then choose a repair route: an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider in person, or a mail-in repair with a prepaid shipping box. Apple also offers Express Replacement Service under the plan, which sends you the replacement before you send the broken unit back. Apple’s terms say that if it exchanges the covered equipment, the original becomes Apple’s property and the replacement is yours.

Two things are worth knowing before you claim. Apple’s AirPods service page lists in-person and mail-in service only, so a claim means a service visit rather than a part swap at home. And the price you read in the table is Apple’s published estimate, not a quote: an authorized provider inspects the device, sets the final fee and adds tax. If the provider finds further damage, the price can go up.

For a lost AirPod, the route is different again. Apple’s AirPods support page explains that you use Find My to locate the missing earbud or case, and if it is genuinely gone you can purchase a replacement, which is charged at the loss price whether or not you hold AppleCare+.

Who should buy it

Buy the plan if the earbuds live a hard life: gym sessions, bike rides, a pocket with keys, a dog that likes ears, or children. The $29 fee turns an $89 mistake into a small one, and Apple’s terms say you are eligible for unlimited service events while the plan is active.

Skip it if your AirPods live in a case on a desk and you have never replaced one. The savings only appear when something breaks, and the plan does not cover the most common mishap with earbuds, which is losing them. If losing them is the real risk, spend the money on a case with a strap and on keeping Find My switched on, because Apple will use Find My to locate a missing earbud before it will sell you a replacement.

One more factor for anyone who runs: AirPods Pro 3 carry an IP57 rating for dust, sweat and water resistance for non-water sports and exercise. Apple’s sweat and water resistance page says that rating is not a permanent condition and can diminish over time, and that the earbuds are not designed for water sports such as swimming or showering.

If you already pay for AppleCare+ on an iPhone, read the next section before you buy again.

There is also a case for treating the plan as part of the purchase rather than insurance. Apple sells AirPods Pro 3 at $249, and the $19.99 a year plan adds accidental damage cover on top of the one-year limited warranty, battery service below 80% and 24/7 support for about 8% of the price of the earbuds. Over the year it covers, that is a small addition for repairs that cost $89 each without it.

AppleCare One covers AirPods too

AppleCare One is the subscription plan that covers several products at once. It costs $19.99 a month for up to three products, with extra products at $5.99 a month each, and the Family version is $49.99 a month for up to six people. The price does not change with what you put in the plan, and Apple said at launch that customers could save up to $11 a month against buying separate AppleCare+ plans.

Headphones are eligible, but with a limit: devices must be four years old or newer and headphones one year old or newer. You can add a product you already own, as long as it is in good condition, and Apple may run a diagnostic check and inspection before it adds it.

For AirPods alone, the standalone plan is far cheaper than a year of AppleCare One. For a household with an iPhone, an iPad and an Apple Watch already on coverage, One is the cheaper way to add the AirPods.

Plan Price What it covers Theft and loss AirPods Pro 3
No plan $0 One-year limited warranty Not covered Warranty only
AppleCare+ for AirPods Pro 3, annual $19.99/yr AirPods Pro 3, renewed each year until cancelled Not covered Yes
AppleCare+ for AirPods Pro 3, fixed term $39 AirPods Pro 3, two years per the reseller listings Not covered Yes
AppleCare One Individual $19.99/mo Up to three products iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch Yes, under one year old
AppleCare One Family $49.99/mo All eligible devices for six people iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch Yes, under one year old

What AppleCare+ will not pay for

Loss is the big one. Apple’s own terms list replacing covered equipment that is lost or stolen among the things Apple will not do, and Apple covers theft and loss only for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, under AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss or AppleCare One. A lost AirPod is $89 and a lost case is $99 whether you hold the plan or not.

The rest of the fine print is worth knowing. Accidental damage means physical damage from handling due to unexpected and unintentional events, so deliberate damage is not covered. There is no service fee for mechanical failures, but every incident of accidental damage carries the $29 fee plus tax. Repairs can use genuine Apple parts that are new or previously used. Apple’s terms also let it restrict service to the country where the device or the plan was bought.

The other limit is timing. Apple says you can add AppleCare+ within 60 days of buying a new device, so a pair you have already had for six months cannot be covered retroactively.

Where to buy it

The cheapest route is often the bundle. Costco sells AirPods Pro 3 with two years of AppleCare+ for Headphones included, with unlimited repairs for drops and spills, battery replacements at no extra charge and Express Replacement Service, at a price that varies by warehouse. Otherwise, Apple sells the $19.99 a year plan alongside the earbuds on apple.com, and the $39 two-year plan through authorized resellers such as Brown Bookstore and Cavalier Computers.

Whatever you buy, check the coverage at Apple’s coverage checker with the serial number, and keep the receipt, because Apple’s terms ask you to provide a copy of your original proof of purchase when you claim.

What to do next

  1. Work out your own risk: if one damaged earbud would cost you $89 and annoy you, the $19.99 a year plan is worth it.
  2. Check whether you already have AppleCare One, and whether your AirPods are under a year old so they can be added.
  3. Compare the bundle at Costco with the standalone annual plan before buying.
  4. Buy within 60 days of the earbuds if you want the battery service and the accidental damage cover.
  5. Accept that a lost AirPod or a lost case is never covered, and buy a case with a strap if that is your habit.

Apple’s battery rules show up elsewhere too: is it worth replacing your iPhone battery at 80% covers the same 80% threshold on a much more expensive device, and is the iPad 2 still usable covers the other end of the scale, where a repair costs more than a replacement.
