Is it worth replacing an iPad battery, or should you buy a new iPad?

Apple's out-of-warranty battery prices by model, what a third-party repair costs, and the one question that decides whether repairing or replacing makes sense.

Question: My iPad battery is worn out. Is replacing the battery cheaper than buying a new iPad?
Answer: Usually yes, as long as your iPad still runs iPadOS 27 and the rest of the tablet works. Apple charges $99 to $199 for an out-of-warranty battery replacement depending on the model, while a new iPad runs from $449 to $1,499. The exception is an iPad that has fallen off Apple's software list, because a new battery only buys you more time on an operating system that will never get another feature.

What a battery replacement costs

Apple’s own out-of-warranty estimates, checked October 2026, are the number to start from. The figures are estimates rather than quotes: tax is added on top, and an Authorized Service Provider sets the final price after inspecting the tablet.

iPad model Apple battery service Third-party shop price Comparable new iPad price
iPad (9th generation) $99 Not on the iFixForU list Not sold new; refurbished $339
iPad (10th generation) $119 $119 $449 (iPad (A16), 128GB)
iPad mini (A17 Pro) $119 $119 $599
iPad Air 11-inch (M4) $129 $129 (11-inch Air, M3) $749
iPad Air 13-inch (M4) $149 $129 (13-inch Air, M3) $949
iPad Pro 11-inch (M5) $179 $149 (11-inch Pro, M4) $1,199
iPad Pro 13-inch (M5) $199 $149 (13-inch Pro, M4) $1,499

The last column is the price of the closest model Apple still sells, which is what a repair is competing against. The third-party column is one repair chain’s published list, the iFixForU prices for iPad battery replacements published in August 2026, and it shows how little Apple’s premium really is. A shop charges the same as Apple or less for a straightforward battery swap, and the difference between the cheapest and dearest Apple estimate is $100, not $500.

Apple’s own iPad repair page also states plainly that a worn battery is not a warranty problem: the warranty covers manufacturing defects, and “doesn’t cover accidental damage or batteries that wear down from normal use”. If your iPad is still inside its one-year warranty and the battery has failed early, that is a different conversation, and Apple will look at it under warranty first.

Whether the battery is really the problem

Newer iPads show the answer in Settings. Apple’s support page lists the models with a battery health screen: iPad Pro (M4 and M5), iPad Air (M2, M3 and M4), iPad mini (A17 Pro) and iPad (A16). Open Settings, tap Battery, then Battery Health, and you get a maximum capacity percentage, a cycle count, the date the battery was made and the date it was first used.

On an older iPad the screen does not exist. Apple’s page is clear that the feature is limited to those models, so on anything else you are estimating from behaviour: how many hours you used to get, how quickly it now charges, whether it shuts down under load. Apple’s stated design target is the number to measure against. The company says an iPad battery is “designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 1000 complete charge cycles”, and that target sits right where Apple puts the service threshold, since AppleCare+ replaces the battery at no charge once capacity drops below 80%.

The question that decides it: software support

Here is the part most repair-versus-replace guides skip. Apple does not publish a support window for iPads, so there is no table of “years of updates left”. What there is instead is the current compatibility list, and it separates cleanly into two groups.

iPadOS 27, released September 14, 2026, runs on the iPad Pro 12.9-inch (4th generation and later), iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation and later), iPad Air (4th generation and later), iPad (9th generation and later) and iPad mini (6th generation and later).

Everything older is on a final major version and receives security patches only. Apple’s security releases page shows iPadOS 26.7.1, released September 28, 2026, still shipping for the iPad Air (3rd generation and later), iPad (8th generation and later), iPad mini (5th generation and later), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation) and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation). Below that, the iPad (7th generation) is on iPadOS 18.7.10, and the iPad (6th generation), iPad Pro 10.5-inch and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd generation) are on iPadOS 17.7.11.

Your iPad Runs iPadOS 27 What a new battery buys you
iPad Pro 11-inch and 13-inch, iPad Air, iPad (9th gen, 10th gen or A16), iPad mini 6th gen Yes More years on the current operating system
iPad Air 3rd gen, iPad 8th gen, iPad mini 5th gen, iPad Pro 11-inch 1st gen No, on iPadOS 26.7 Security fixes only, no new features
iPad 7th gen No, on iPadOS 18.7 Security fixes only
iPad 6th gen, iPad Pro 10.5-inch, Pro 12.9-inch 2nd gen No, on iPadOS 17.7 Security fixes only

So an iPad (8th generation) with a tired battery is a bad repair candidate. Its replacement battery costs $99 and it will never see another major iPadOS release. The same $99 on an iPad Pro 11-inch (M5), which is also getting a new battery for $179, buys several more years of current software.

Repair or replace: three checks before you spend money on an iPad battery A three-step decision flow. Step one: check whether the iPad still runs iPadOS 27, and if it does, repair the battery for $99 to $199. Step two: if it is on a final version, compare the repair cost with a new iPad at $449 and up. Step three: if the screen, charging port or speakers are also failing, replace the iPad instead. Three checks before you spend money Decision flow, not data 1. Does it still run iPadOS 27? Yes: repair the battery for $99 to $199 2. On a final version: repair or replace? Compare the repair with a new iPad, $449 and up 3. Screen, charging port or speakers failing? Then replace the iPad instead

What else has to be right

A battery is one component. Before you book anything, look at the rest of the tablet.

If the screen is cracked, the charging port is loose or a speaker is dead, a battery swap will not fix any of it, and you are spending $119 to keep a device that still needs work. Apple’s own out-of-warranty estimate for the 13-inch iPad Pro (M5) lists “other damage” at $1,149, which is most of the price of a new tablet, so a damaged Pro is a replacement candidate rather than a repair candidate.

Check the storage too. A four-year-old iPad may be full of video, and Apple’s trade-in credit for an iPad depends on the model and its condition, so the estimator on the iPad store page is the number to look at before you decide the tablet is worth nothing. A tablet with a fresh battery and a slow chip is still a tablet that opens apps quickly; a tablet with a new battery and a full drive feels broken. If photos are the reason the tablet is full, turning off iCloud Photos deletes your photos is worth reading before you make that call.

The price of new iPads went up in June 2026

Apple raised iPad prices on June 25, 2026, citing memory and storage component costs. The entry iPad went from $349 to $449, the iPad mini from $499 to $599, the 11-inch iPad Air from $599 to $749 and the 11-inch iPad Pro from $999 to $1,199. The 13-inch Air went from $799 to $949 and the 13-inch Pro from $1,299 to $1,499.

That matters for this decision because the repair prices did not move. A $119 battery on an iPad (10th generation) now buys you a tablet worth $449 instead of $349, and a $179 battery on an iPad Pro 11-inch (M5) buys you a $1,199 tablet rather than a $999 one. Repairing got better value in June, not worse.

Third-party and do-it-yourself options

Apple is not the only route, and the difference in price is small enough that the warranty terms matter more than the invoice.

iFixit sells the aftermarket model A2288 battery for $59.99. That part fits the iPad Air (4th generation), iPad Air (5th generation), the 11-inch iPad Air with M2 and the iPad (10th generation). It is a part, not a service: you also need the adhesive strips, which iFixit sells for $9.99, and iFixit’s own guide rates the iPad (10th generation) battery replacement a 3 to 4 hour job at “difficult” difficulty. That is a real option if you enjoy the work and want the tablet open anyway.

A repair shop is the middle path. iFixForU publishes a price list for iPad battery replacements, dated August 2, 2026, at $119 for the iPad (10th generation) and iPad mini (A17 Pro), $129 for the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Air with M3, and $149 for the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro with M4. Every price includes the battery, labour, fresh adhesive and a 90-day warranty, and the company says the work takes about 45 minutes on the bench.

What Apple’s route buys you is the parts and the paperwork. Apple’s repair terms say services and parts carry a 90-day guarantee, and that service can use genuine Apple parts that are new or previously used genuine parts. Apple also states on its iPad repair page that Apple Authorized Service Providers can set their own service fees and will provide their own estimate, which is why a quote from a shop can differ from the published number.

One difference worth checking before you book either route. iFixForU states that Apple’s iPad battery service sends a replacement iPad rather than opening yours, and that your data does not travel with the swap, so a full backup comes first. Apple’s own repair terms allow for either repair or replacement of a product, and Apple’s iPad repair page says it will inspect your device to determine the final service fee. If you rely on your iPad for work, ask the shop in writing whether you get your own tablet back.

Repairing helps the resale value too

Not dramatically, but measurably, and the way to see it is Apple’s own refurbished store. As of October 2026 the refurbished iPad (9th generation) with 256GB sells for $339, the refurbished iPad mini (6th generation) with 64GB for $459, the refurbished 11-inch iPad Air with M3 and 128GB for $589, and the refurbished 11-inch iPad Pro (4th generation) with 256GB for $789.

A battery that no longer holds a charge is the first thing a buyer asks about. An iPad that runs all day, with a battery Apple serviced and a 90-day guarantee behind it, sits closer to the refurbished price than one that needs a new battery on day one.

What to do next

  1. Open Settings, tap Battery, then Battery Health, and read the maximum capacity percentage. On an iPad made before 2024 the screen does not exist, so judge from runtime and Apple’s 80% target.
  2. Check whether your model is on the iPadOS 27 list. If it is not, and you are choosing between a $99 battery and a new tablet, buy the tablet.
  3. Price both routes before committing. Ask an Authorized Service Provider for a written estimate, and ask a repair shop the same question, so you are comparing the full cost including tax.
  4. Look at the screen, charging port and storage, not just the battery. A fresh battery in a tablet with a cracked display is money spent in the wrong order.
  5. If you want the money back later, sell or trade in the repaired iPad rather than the broken one. Apple’s trade-in page takes the serial number, and Apple’s own refurbished prices are a realistic benchmark for what it is worth.

Apple’s battery thresholds come up in the same place on other devices: is it worth replacing your iPhone battery at 80% covers the phone side of the rule, and is the iPad 2 still usable covers the end of the scale where a repair costs more than the tablet is worth.
